Luke, the person has to be a very interesting guy. He’d be a fun guy to hang out with and bounce questions off of. If he had a Twitter account at the time, he’d have a Klout score of 90+. He wasn’t one of the 12 Apostles, but had to be a guy on the inside. He witnessed a lot of what is documented in the New Testament, but also investigated and researched much of it.

Luke 1

Theophilus must have been a friend and someone of influence who Luke respected. They probably had a lot of ideas that were not shared between the two, but there had to be a level of respect shared. They probably both loved history and current events.

Luke writes both the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts to Theophilus as a record of his research about all things that had taken place. He researched it with extreme detail.

Learned of the details that led up to John the Baptist being born. Perhaps he heard the tales of John being compared to Elijah and knowing his history figured that there was an amazing story from his parents. Thus the Zechariah and Elizabeth story.

We also have the well known Christmas story through Luke. He had to have spoken with Mary and family members who knew of truth of Jesus’ birth. He details the prophecies and shows how when God makes a promise… he keeps it. Nothing is impossible with God.

Luke 2

The birth of Jesus. The shepherds, angels, wisemen, Mary, Joseph, the Inn, the manger. Bethlehem. God had been quiet for 400 years and now it was time for salvation to be seen. Light and revelation would be felt. When Jesus showed up, he wasted no time in letting his parents know that he would be found in his Father’s house preparing for his earthly ministry.

Luke 3

John the Baptist is at work. He is calling people from sin to God through faith.

Jesus’s mission = find missing people and make disciples.

Luke 4

Jesus undergoes temptation from Satan. This version from Luke has more details than the other versions… You gotta wonder who Luke got these details from. It probably was not Jesus and I can’t imagine Satan sat down with him and debriefed Luke on the encounter. Had to have been divine revelation but reinforced through conversations with the disciples and followers.

Luke 5

Peter hears the word of God. From God. Wow. He wisely responds “At your word” I will do what you want me to do. Wow.

Peter is called and he realizes that Jesus cares about him. He realizes that he could go and catch… not just fish.

They left everything to follow him on mission.

Paralytic leaves everything that he had known.

Levi leaves everything he had known.

Pharisees just don’t get it. They are unwilling to leave all that they KNOW.

Luke 6

The 12 apostles were an odd bunch. You had guys from all backgrounds, beliefs, states of life and standing… They came together in unity with a leader who led. They followed.

Jesus’ teachings directly contradicted culture. They were metaphors yet literal. They were paradoxes. They were heavy yet freeing. They were direct and personal but needed by all. He was the Rock that we all need to understand any of it and weather any storm in life.

Luke 7

The centurion has amazing faith. Jesus even admits it. How did some people totally see and get the miracles that he performed yet others were blinded to who he was. Who he said he was. His actions proclaimed the truth.

Luke 8

A chapter later, the disciples… the very people with him are in a boat and scared for their safety. Jesus calms the storm and he asks them “Where is your faith?” Wonder if the centurion, if on the boat, would have put them in their place. They were so close, yet so far away from the truth.

Luke 9

Jesus then sends these faithless guys our 2×2 to proclaim the gospel. They had to learn that they must die to themselves and follow him daily.

While other people reject Him, they must remain firm. The cost of following him is high, but there is no other way.

Chapter 9 of Mark ends up talking about the fact that salt that has lost its saltiness can not be made salty again. A whole lot of focus on salt. We often hear this verse and focus on the salt aspect… but the last part of the verse and chapter almost seems like it is thrown in at the end.

“And Be at peace with one another”

It just seems thrown in there. We have to remember that the original books of the Bible were not written how we see it now. there were no chapters and verse numbers. So as we jump into chapter 10, think about that last statement about being at peace with others.

Not sure why I didn’t just go ahead and try to finish Matthew yesterday. Oh well. Let’s get to it.

Matthew 27

Jesus is delivered to Pilate. Jesus never answered. Not once. Pilate was amazed at his “non-response.” He is even more surprised that the people who have crowded choose Barabbas to be released from prison and punishment.

Jesus is crucified. The text of the Bible do not come close to describing the horror that took place.

He is mocked and laughed at before death by the soldiers. After he dies and after earthquakes and darkness and bodies being raised from the ground… The centurian who was watching it all isn’t laughing anymore. He is filled with AWE and admits that “truly, this was the Son of God.”

Jesus is buried. There is a guard put in place.

Matthew 28

After the Sabbath, three days later, Jesus is resurrected. Jesus greeted the women who had come to tomb. Women are the first to see him.

Matthew ends abruptly with the disciples and Jesus on a mountain in Galilee. He tells them that authority is given to them and that they are to go into all the world. Make disciples of all. Baptize them. Teach them to observe/obey Jesus’ teaching. He also tells them that He is with them forever.

Mark 1

Mark begins in the midst of the story. John the Baptist and Jesus are already alive. John is proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. He baptizes Jesus. Jesus is immediately taken into the wilderness where he undergoes physical temptation from Satan. Jesus does not fail. He starts his ministry and calls disciples to follow Him.

Jesus teaches and heals with authority that the scribes do not have. He amazes crowds.

Mark 2

Jesus heals and the scribes just sit there thinking that he is blaspheming God.

He continues to call disciples to Him. Levi (the tax collector) is called. The Pharisees can’t believe it. Jesus simply says that He came not for the righteous but for sinners.

Jesus is questioned… and yet he turns around and asks his own questions.

Mark 3

Crowds are following Jesus and the disciples (apostles.) There are 12 now. When asked if Jesus has time for his Mother and Brothers… Jesus tells them that those who are doing the will of God are his family.

Mark 4

Jesus teaches a parable about a sower. He uses parables to explain to his disciples truth. To some, the parables would be void of meaning… to others, they would be crystal clear.

Later Jesus commands with authority a storm. This storm is like a parable. Sometimes we need to experience the storms before calm can happen.

Mark 5

Jesus heals a man who has a demon. This man suffered long with the demon. It is a reminder to us that we can not ignore those who cry out to us. We must have compassion on them as we were given compassion. After Jesus heals the man, the disciples and Jesus get in a boat to leave. The man goes on mission to tell anyone and everyone he can about his healing and the man who healed him.

Jairus came and asked Jesus to heal his daughter. He asked publicly  Jesus healed the daughter privately. Another woman comes to Jesus privately seeking healing. She is publicly healed.

Mark 6

Jesus is rejected in his home of Nazareth. Jesus sends out the 12 Apostles to use the authority that they have to proclaim repentance to the world. The 12 were sent 2 by 2. I have a note I wrote in my Bible that says says it was 6 teams that went to 204 cities. If they averaged a week per city… this would be 9 months work.

John the Baptist is killed.

Jesus feeds the 5 thousand. Amazing miracle. He walks on water. Even more amazing? He controls the winds and storms.

Where ever they went, sick were brought to him for healing. Since he is not dead and is still alive… we should still bring sick to him. Since he is with us, we can introduce them to Him at anytime.

Mark 7 – 8

The Pharisees start this chapter debating traditions and commandments with Jesus. In the next chapter, They end want to see a sign that He is who He says He is. He performs SO MANY signs and miracles during his earthly ministry. Ugh. Clueless generation for sure.

Mark 9

More healing. There is a great interaction with Him and a father of a child who is healed. After the healing… the father pleas with Jesus, “I believe; help my unbelief.”

Jesus is transfigured in front of them… yet they still argue about who will be greater in Heaven.

They are told to not stop anyone who does mighty works in His name. For the one who is not against us is for us.

Adding even more depression to the fact that I have gotten WAY behind in my Bible reading is the fact that when I open my Pocket ESV, the bookmark ribbon is still where it was on March 25.

Doh.

You see, the 90 day thing was a challenge. One that I failed. But the best part about reading the Bible is that no matter where you are in life, you can start right now. Read a little Gain a LOT.

God will not allow you to read something and get nothing from it. The Word of God has truth that we need.

Make the effort. Do it.

A few quotes that I liked and wanted to remember. Dr Ben Carson gets slammed for speaking truth. Truth hurts sometime, but it is still truth. You can’t say that he lies when it comes to making yourself motivated to succeed vs allowing yourself to be content with status quo and/or poverty.

I am so excited to get to this point. After reading through the Old Testament in 70 days, it is almost hard to imagine that you don’t even get to spend 3 full weeks in the New Testament. (and here I am gonna try to double up days and read/write to catch up…)

I know right now, that I’m not gonna be able to give the text the focus that it needs. There will be so many takeaways from each chapter, that writing them all here isn’t gonna happen.

I’ll just do my best and document what jumps out at me.

Not sure why this popped in my mind tonight. Classic.

Five is Right Out.

Day 70! The final day of reading in the Old Testament for at least 20 more days :)

Zechariah. He continued to urge the Israelites to endure the opposition they were encountering, and spoke of hope that was coming in a messiah. The prophecies and visions in this book are many. You have to think about the fact that God is about to be silent for 400 years and this may be one of the last words that the people hear before John the Baptist comes on the scene. Interesting.

Malachi. He turned up the heat a little in confronting the sinful actions of the people of Israel. He called them to total obedience and worship. I love chapter 3 and 4. Very hope filled and looking forward to Christ.
